Jack's past is shown. He was the son of a prostitute named Mary who was born with a special right eye that lets him see people's auras and emotions. Despite living in poverty, Jack grew up happy because he was comforted by how brightly his mother's love shone. When his rich father broke his promise to come back and marry her by marrying another woman, Mary started treating Jack with disdain.
