Sabu captures the criminal Tsunegoro, known as Sadosune accused of rousing the labourers of Sado gold mine under the Shoganate and plotting a rebellion. He is to be exiled in Sado. Sabu is assigned to the escort mission to take him there, along the Tokai highway. It is a 14-day round trip and winter is setting in. A decoy palanquin is sent on ahead, but it is ambushed and the officials killed. Sabu's palanquin frightened bearers run off, so he and Sadosune continue through the snow. Meanwhile, Ichi has a premonition and sets off after Sabu. Sadosune becomes ill, and Sabu looks after him, much to his surprise...
