While Thorfinn and Einar await their punishment, Thorfinn contemplates an alternative to violence for resolving conflicts. When Ketil learns of Arnheid's escape attempt, he loses his temper and savagely beats her, even when she reveals that she is carrying his child. Snake eventually stops him, and Leif offers to buy her along with Thorfinn and Einar, but Ketil refuses to release her. Einar is devastated and enraged by the brutal beating of Arnheid, while Ketil angrily prepares to defend his land against the king.
