Emily immediately clashes with "the pride of the Murray", the iron traditions and determination of her mother's family, so much so that she would like to escape and return to her home, but little by little she begins to appreciate New Moon, where she rediscovers the beauties of nature that she thought she had abandoned when she had to leave home.
