The special summarizes the "Mello and Near" arc of the anime by omitting most of Mello's involvement in the Kira case. Unlike its predecessor, the film merely uses a condensed version of the final episode as its ending, followed by an added scene of Aizawa and Matsuda finding Light's body. There is also an added scene of Ryuk leaving the human realm.
